OrilliaMatters 10I think its more accurate to say that sometimes people used religion as an excuse to gain power and money. Its greed and power that are the real problem. The Soviet revolution and communism as a whole were not religious uprisings. Nazism was not religious. Most fascist states are not. To say that religion is the issue is just repeating a talking point. Many people find the community of hope and faith that a church brings is a way to bring even greater meaning to their life and to the lives of others. Plus, in a lonely world its always great to find people to walk through it with. The search for truth pushes many of us forward. Interestingly, most of what we determine to "be a good person" is codified in religion and has become inate to us due to it being part if our culture for so long. It will be interesting to see if our culture is better or worse off in 50 years if people avoid religion. Much of the charity work in our town is likely being done by a church member.
