Fireworks for personal use could be banned in Guelph

Really, this is what city staff work on? Can we please not try and create better priorities? Creating solutions for problems that do not exist is expensive, wasteful and utterly ridiculous. It is no wonder people want less government involvement in our daily lives.

Sorry but I believe public spaces need to remain public. Yes these folks need assistance, but putting up stakes where ever they please is not the answer. From what I have read about this law, it aims to allow for encampments but under some rules. Last I checked, all of us have to follow some societal rules.

Again, ridiculous that city council prioritizes this drivel. I had a dog that was terrified of fireworks. That was a problem I had to manage however I did not expect all others should have to do without due to my issue. Why is it that all are penalized due to a small number of irresponsible people and by a small number of loud opponents to whatever the issue is. The majority needs to start drowning out the minority but alas this group tends to be too busy contributing to the greater good to fight these minor fights. Unfortunately the minority are changing society to suit their needs at the expense of the rest of us.

If you are so against this, then please provide a viable option that meets the needs of ALL the people of Guelph. Good for you for feeling for these people and supporting them but I think the vast majority of citizen feel the same. The difference is that I do not believe the vast majority believe it is not ok for anyone to just setup a camp site where ever they please. This is especially true of very common areas frequented by the public. It seems quite telling that there are no open ATMs downtown after banking hours.

We in North America really have no idea about preserving our history. A building like that should have been maintained but alas it has fallen, like so many, into disrepair and now considered by some to be useless. Craftsmanship is no longer valued or respected and short sightedness prevails. A shame.

Agreed. Can Guelph not get through one project on time, on budget and without a lawsuit?

Wow, providing more tax payer funds for developers. I am in the wrong business!

Roby Fraser, I am tired of government have to mandating common sense, We know that there liquid in a hot cup of coffee is hot. We know not to stick our fingers in electrical sockets. We know not to swallow small parts. We know matches create fire. We do not need a small group of people lobbying vote hungry politicians to mandate how we behave. Take accountability for yourself. Do not ask government to do it for you and more importantly, me!

Funny how we regularly hear about Landlord greed and defend tenants that go for months/years without paying rent and using loop holes to dodge their obligation to pay for an apartment. Yes there are some nasty Landlords but not all. My wife and I have rented suites in our homes along with other properties. Fortunately we have had great tenants that have stayed longer than expected and were very respectful. We became friends with many of them. Unfortunately though, there are too many stories of renters trashing places, not paying the agreed upon monthly amount and landlords unable to evict these people. Respect goes both ways and the current rules only favour renters. No wonder some landlords are looking to get out of the business, I am one of them.

Sarah Rosenberg's comment makes the most sense. “I truly don’t believe we should ban things due to a small percentage of people who abuse their usage. Today it’s fireworks, what’s next – candles? alcohol?”.This is typically how our governments deal with things. Time to change that.

These are two different issues. Homelessness does not always mean drug addiction and visa versa. I too am concerned about the downtown core as this is an area of business, recreation and traditionally, celebration. Unfortunately with the blatant, open use of these very harmful drugs and the problems that are associated with usage, public spaces are becoming more difficult to frequent. Public spaces are for all citizens and the needs of all citizens should be considered. I for one would like to be able to walk through the square without being harassed and i would wager many others feel the same..

So where is the data showing there is a problem in the first place?

I'm not sure students are in a position or have the right to make demands. No one wants to see innocents harmed or killed but making demands should not be swaying anyone to their cause.
