Report: Northern Ontario seeing 'staggering' homelessness growth

I get the psych was outdated, but we never replaced supervised living capacity. It was a bait'n'switch. The in-community care crowd STILL won't admit they were misguided, and are still trying to ham fist their way at the cost of those who can't take care of themselves being left out on the streets. For North Bay, build new capacity on the old psych site, with all the resources in a modern village like they do in nordic countries. You DO NOT abandon people in town where street drug dealers are. Looking at you, Northern Pines. The in-community University educated brigade have been sheltered their whole lives and need to justify their jobs with redundant services spread across town. They're selling treatment, not a solution. It's dishonest, posing for the paper, while things continue to deteriorate under their desired system we purposely transitioned to in the late 00's.You had your way, time to do it right.

It's too bad the NDP let him rot on the vine, instead of make him leader.

Put the shelter and resources on the old psych site, away from the dealers' reach. Is there not a single adult in the room on this issue? Leadership must have been sheltered in University to learn this level of naïveté.Turning Chippewa into a prison, and putting up those sound blasters is so childish. Now closing the bridge? Come on, grow up.

@Gimmeabrak: Already have. Two bikes stolen from junkies camped out behind our house ("police" park) the police said they couldn't do anything about, even after they threatened the home owner they'd be back. Went down to northern pines and got one back, unfortunately the vintage bike was already chopped up. Police called me later to tell me I'm not wanted back on northern pines property and will be charged with trespass next time. Unbelievable. There isn't a single adult in the room apparently in any of these issues, it's insane. They also turned my old high school into a prison, instead of moving the problem across the street back to the old psych site where it belongs, out of reach of local drug dealers, not putting people in old roach motels as if that's decent.I swear, you HAVE to go to University to learn to be this stupid. Not one person in power hasn't drunk the kool-aid, all dishonest brokers.

Build a psych village on the old site already, there isn't a single adult in the room. Bleeding hearts are misguided and had their way, they failed.

When the government has to implement a program like RNIP at the tax payers' expense to artificially incentivize people to move to have-not regions, instead of letting economies attract people as they naturally grow (or shrink), of course it will fail! It also disenfranchises the locals by hooking employers up with talent from abroad, so job postings don't even get to show here.Look team equity: Your hearts are in the right place, but any form of accelerationism beyond equality + time will lead to a corrupt results and undo the very cause you stood for.Beware those who cloak themselves in virtue, for their aim is not true. Looking at you northern mayors who betrayed their communities begging for RNIP to be made permanent. The Ponzi scheme must end, figure it out.

Can someone reply with the councillors on the good side of this, and the ones who voted to potentially hide crimes?Just so we all know who to throw out.Looks like Bain, Mitchell, and Chirico have got to go.Inch and Lowery are on the right side of history, who else?

This is my first season riding since the southerners moved up here a couple years ago, and I'm terrified.Between them and the city not repaving properly (in strips like trout lake road), I think our roads have become congested death traps. We were already a have-not region before, now we have even less everything, except homeless.

If the economics of a region don't naturally attract people to rural and northern have-not regions, you DON'T astroturf the labour and housing markets causing insane inflation at the tax payer's expense no less: RNIP kills communities. This an artificial demand-fuelled crisis. Our politicians, mayors, MPPs, and MPs are all to blame for this ideological dogmatism.

To eschew the American flag is so childish and shortsighted. People need to get off their virtue signalling high horse. The US is having a moment that won't last forever, and then what? We shouldn't punish ourselves with tariffs out of spite, just be the bigger man and let them stick their finger in their own eye. They already blinked.

Wow, completely disconnected from reality!

Even the experts and police haven't done their homework! All of north bay is controlled airspace. From the base, to the aerodrome on trout lake, to the hospital helipad, out to cranberry trail, which is why the RC club is there, they're right outside the limit. The drone map is wrong when you compare it to the airspace map both apparently from Nav Canada. Nothing is supposed to be in the sky other than planes and helicopters over NB.

Children eat their dessert before dinner. Until they can pave the roads, maintain basic infrastructure, and move the northern pines fiasco up to the old psych site: No arena!Once again, not a single adult in the room.

Why do we keep having the bend over backwards to bail out Boomers? The rest of us all have to deal with the consequences of THEIR actions (consuming the wealth of the next 3 generations), nevermind ours, and live within out means, which the standard of living has already deteriorated below home ownership, as well as a cost of living crisis, and here they want to do nothing living off the backs of others. To quote Willy Wonka: "You get NOTHING! You LOSE! Good day, Sir!"

Rebuild the Psych already!!! Not a single adult in the room, I swear...

It's too bad the NDP let Charlie Angue rot on the vine to chase metro votes. We could have had an actually labour party, instead of these phony champagne socialist urbanites.Miners, foresters, manufacturers, and railway workers could bring about any change needed with their collective hand on the brake.Instead we got a pro-migrant wage-slaver who helped devalue labour's bargaining power, and walked back on so many red lines drawn he's out in the parking lot.

Make a secured psych village on the old psych site with all the resources centralized there. Have the gathering place provide their services there. Individual tiny units so they can only burn theirs down without harming anyone else. Then they have the dignity of having their own door that locks as well. Look up dementia villages in nordic countries.Dumping people into roach motels where street dealers have access has been an unmitigated disaster. Northern Pines was a waste of poorly planned money. Imagine how many units they could have built for the money they spent on a poorly located, single building that can go up in flames in one go. Completely dunderheaded.Bleeding hearts, you had your turn, time to modernize our institutions. Your 2000's model is outdated and has failed. We needed to replace the psych with something humane, not just tear it down for nothing.
