Guthrie among mayors accepting Ford's 'invitation' to ask for notwithstanding clause

The mayors should be asking Premier Ford to spearhead an effort to abolish the notwithstanding clause, not asking him to use it.

It's true that before the 1950s and 1960s some activities of Indigenous people were deemed illegal by our federal government. However, nothing we can do in the present day will change this. If an Indigenous meeting place is desired, may I suggest Nokom's House at the University of Guelph? I really don't understand why our municipal government is involved in this type of activity.

The current councillors don't seem able to deal with basic municipal problems like excessive litter - a perennial problem in Ward 3 - and harassment by unionized public officials. Let's get a whole new crew!

Politicians and government officials are not trustworthy. They must be held to account by dissenters, the press, and the courts. No politician or government should ever use the "Notwithstanding Clause." It is a stain on our democracy and should be removed from our Constitution.

There are far too many government employees, and former government employees, on Council. We need councillors who will represent the taxpayers and push back against government employees and trade unionists.

Fantastic! Now I can easily take my bicycle to Toronto and back for a mere $10!

Weekend traffic on the 401 isn't an issue for most people. For example, driving time to Stouffville from Guelph on Sunday mornings, via 401 and 404, is only 1 hour and 10-15 minutes.

Let's not be too critical of Ms. O'Rourke. After all, she's faced with the unenviable (impossible?) task of explaining the difference between the Lemmings and the NDP.

Agencies of Canadian governments should not be buying goods and services from American suppliers, especially the American defence establishment, unless it is absolutely necessary. Mr. Schreiner, please look into this. On the surface, this purchase by the GRCA looks as bad as all municipal transit workers in Canada belonging to an American union.

Outstanding fiscal results! Keep up the good work!

Does this increase mean the taxpayers of Guelph can expect the council to extricate our transit workers from the clutches of the Amalgamated Transit Union, the American union that controls them?

Mr. Donaldson, the big ticket items in the operating budget are police services, transit services, and fire services, not social services. Would you please elaborate on provincial downloading? What has been downloaded recently? Obviously, staff reductions in the Guelph Police Service, Guelph Transit, and the Guelph Fire Department would help to lower property taxes.

I think the seat should be awarded to the candidate who collects the most empty beers cans, pop cans, and plastic water bottles in a week. I counted 25-30 empty plastic water bottles on Willow Road between Alma and Applewood this morning, and another 5 on Alma by the train tracks. This is an example of a basic municipal issue that the current councillors seem unable to deal with. BTW, you don't see litter like this in most areas of downtown Toronto.

It seems that our politicians and public officials are stumped when it comes to the encampment issue. May I suggest they tackle something simpler? In Guelph, there are tens of thousands of empty beverage containers - beers cans, pop cans, plastic water bottles, etc - littering our city and its environs. How about it, CUPE Local 241? Mayor Guthrie? Councillor Alt? Think you handle this one?

How does this new system benefit the property taxpayers of Guelph? Is this the result of a provincial policy to download more services to the municipal level? On the face of it, it looks like the number of government employees involved in the administration of "Justice" will go UP not down. May we please have some analysis on this issue?

The Lemmings won't like that!

What the Big City Mayors really mean is they want more money from the provincial and federal governments.

These projects will not "end homelessness." There is a significant portion of the "homeless" population who prefer, for one reason or another, to have no fixed address. Some of them travel from city to city, stay in shelters, work at day labour for a short while, and then move on. Many of these people are not mentally ill or involved in the drug trade.

Section 239 of the Municipal Act gives the reasons why councillors may hold a closed meeting. The Ontario Ombudsman addresses the issue on this web page:https://www.ombudsman.on.ca/have-a-complaint/who-we-oversee/municipalities/municipal-closed-meetings/open-meetings-guide-for-municipalities.It seems like closed meetings are frowned on. I think I'll ask Councillor Phil Alt about this.
