Justin Trudeau and the Fibberals lost my vote LONG AGO! Next election I am voting for Jagmeet Singh and the NDP. He will do this country a world of good.
Mr. Trevor Lee needs to be appointed to the Chief Administrative Officer position, or Mayor Don McIsaac needs to resign. PERIOD! Mr. Amanpreet Singh Sidhu does not have the experience for the job, and Mr. Lee does. Furthermore, Mr. Lee was the candidate chosen after a search and extensive hiring process. To give the man the job and then just yank it out from under him after he went to all this effort to move here and do the job is just despicable! And if he isn't given the position, I don't blame Mr. Lee one bit if he sues the city to recover for damages he may incur as a result of the city's actions.
This is absolutely horrible that this man was treated this way! While the structure was illegal, it nor the man was doing anybody any harm. And they should have been forced to leave it up until the man was found suitable accomodations and only then kick him out and tear it down.
Here we go again with politicians wasting taxpayers money! With all the issues going on in Canadian society, such as homelessness, surely they could have found a better use for $250K.
Suzanne, you make some good points. But, where's the landlord's responsibility in this? How thoroughly did they check the tenant out before renting to them? Many landlords don't do thorough reference and background checks before they agree to rent to a new tenant.Part of the whole problem of bad tenants & bad landlords is solved by landlords having some more rights and enforcement powers when a tenant misbehaves and does something wrong. That would give them more power to solve issues without going to the landlord tribunal, and also might make a tenant think before doing certain things.
Hmm, seems rather convenient to me that the Fibberals are making this announcement JUST AFTER Mark Carney was sworn in as Prime Minister, and there's talk of a federal election!
Well, I guess Penetanguishene's municipal government has proven beyond any doubt that they have ZERO RESPECT for law and order in this country, and the Supreme Court of Canada and their rulings. Boo!
Thank God Justin Trudeau is GONE! But let's face it....the reality is, he knew full well with how unfavorable he is in the polls with Canadians, and how the NDP was planning a non confidence motion to trigger a election, he would have lost and Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives would be leading the country. This was a desperate attempt for the Fibberals to save face and get a new leader that would be more popular with voters, keep their power and still have a Liberal leader elected as the next Prime Minister.
Here we go again with the City of Orillia making excuses for providing lousy snow removal and NOT listening to residents complaints! Is it really too much to ask that we ask for the streets to be plowed in a reasonable time and the snow banks removed before they get too high?!?! Oh ya, apparently according to our city council :(
I can totally relate to Jane. When I was 21, my Mom died. But in addition to that, I lost my ENTIRE family on both sides when she passed. Except for 2 aunts who were abandoned and adopted in the 1930's, who would be 97 and 92 if they are still alive and I found them, I am a orphan. Being poor and living on a ODSP pension with hardly any money, hardly any friends, no family, and having depression, anxiety and PTSD is bad enough without the pressure of Christmas. And your friends always celebrate with their own families. This is one time of year I rather forget about, and just hope it passes soon.
This warms my heart to see our former Premier, Kathleen Wynne, take a stand for the Greenbelt and encourage politicians to protect it. Now more than ever do we need to protect natural lands and our drinking water!
I will NEVER vote Conservative! First, Mike Harris, and now Doug Ford, have done so much damage to our province and the social and health care supports we all rely on. I will ALWAYS vote Liberal or NDP for that reason alone - those parties can be counted on to make sure vulnerable people in our society are protected!
EXACTLY! And Orillia Council should be ashamed of themselves for renaming the arena. The name should have been left Brian Orser Arena FOREVER....he put this region on the map with his success as a figure skater, it was named for him for a good reason, and that shouldn't have been forgotten!
Amazing how the city of Orillia has to make life difficult for, of all things, a bicycle ice cream vendor! It's a tradition having kids run to the ice cream man and buying ice cream....I remember it fondly from my own childhood. Leave it alone for crying out loud!
Want to drive Christmas shopping to big box stores and online sites? Keep charging for parking in the downtown! Simple as that. People have no incentive to give small businesses their money when they have to pay for parking. Why would I pay to park when I can park for free at Walmart and Best Buy, and I can get mostly everything there or online?
I agree with you wholeheartedly Brad Matthews. If we as a society are willing to kill certain species of wild animals to keep their populations under control, then the same should apply to cats. After all, feral cats are basically a wild animal since they are inhospitable and afraid of humans. So let's not be hypocritical and treat them the same way! However, having said that, let's start to gas the unidentified cats only when the cat shelters get full and are overburdened, make it only as a last resort to control the population and bring them back down to reasonable numbers.
This is so tragic! I hope Orillia rallies around the brothers, comes together and help them rebuild their home. Such a shame this happened when the home was nearly paid off and repairs were being completed. If only their insurance hadn't lapsed :(
Gran, if you live in town, and you love cats and believe in the shelter so much, why not take the city bus? A city bus stop on West St is very close to the shelter, so it would be manageable to get back and forth. It would be a practical way to help out if your financial position dictates that donating cash isn't a option for you. Even at 90 years old, you could still get out and volunteer :)
Sad to hear the Crow's Nest is closing. Such a nice little store with so many unique things. I once bought my Mom a nice 20 inch Toshiba TV set back in the mid 90s from the Crow's Nest.
Interesting how Council couldn't just remove the parking fines, fees & permits entirely for outreach agencies & social service providers permanently - instead they vote to remove them temporarily while they consult with other affected parties?! Council should have done this consulting before making their decision! Furthermore, they already knew what to do without consulting other groups - it's not like they haven't been tacking the homeless problem for years! The more that time goes on, this city is making it clear homeless people are not welcome in Orillia! The city might as well just broadcast to the entire world "homeless people stay away, you're not welcome here!" :(
