A simple example of why I won’t vote Conservative. Poilievre is currently talking “tough on crime”, which has a surface “revenge” appeal but nothing to do with justice. When you look at the facts it doesn’t work. We live next door to a nation that has the toughest sentencing and highest rates of incarceration in the world with the exception of certain despotic regimes. It costs vast sums of money to run and has not made any difference. Better to spend the money on education and social programs to get to the kids before they go off track. That said I’ won’t be voting Liberal either, too many broken promises and empty posturing.
@ nwolf Ah the “far left” boogie man again. Far left like what, wanting single payer health care, clean air, clean water, sensible restrictions on firearms? That kind of “far left” stuff?
Funny that the same people who were against the Feds using the Emergencies Act would be in favour of this egregious example of Government overstepping its bounds. The denizens of the Pink Palace in Toronto know next to nothing about conditions in local areas especially those currently in charge.
The notwithstanding clause is for lazy politicians who can’t/won’t put in the time and energy to craft laws that conform with common law and the constitution.
Fair point, but awareness needs to apply to EVERYBODY when on the road be they pedestrian, cyclists or driver. But the greatest responsibility must lie with the person in charge of more than two tonnes of metal who needs to focus their full attention on the road at all times, which far too many don’t.
Ford is trying to pull the wool over our eyes by making us think that only He can fight Trump. Rubbish. His role would be to talk to Governors in border states but dealing with Trump is the job of the Feds and the treaty in question, USMCA, does not expire until ‘26. Anything that happens before then is just trash talk intended to intimidate. Meanwhile the $200 cheques roll in and we are supposed to be grateful for getting our money back when there are so many things it could have been usefully spent on, and that’s before the bill for the election comes in! Two words for Doug, David Peterson.
I think you have hit the nail on the head. He understands a bit about addiction as he exploited other people’s addiction when he was a dealer but I’ll bet he didn’t use his own product. He understands the need some people have for alcohol and is prepared to exploit that for votes but he doesn’t drink. And he certainly had the experience with his brother to go by but probably couldn’t understand why Rob fell off the wagon after being shipped off to rehab other than it was “weakness”. But there’s more to addiction than weakness, there’s a chemical dependency and the fact that the hit of whatever substance one is addicted to makes them feel good. And getting to the root of the problem takes more time and money than Ford is prepared to spend for people he sees as “weak”.
Well yes, North America was built around the car, but that was in the ‘50s and ‘60s when we had no idea as to what we were doing to the planet, well except for Exxon who did a study that predicted what we are experiencing back in the early ‘80s and then covered it up. https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2023/01/harvard-led-analysis-finds-exxonmobil-internal-research-accurately-predicted-climate-change/The only constant in life is change, we need to adapt to new circumstances all the time and one of the things that has to go is one person sitting in one car along with several thousand others all emitting fumes. Transit is the way forward because we are running out of room for cars
If this comes out of anybody’s pocket it will be by way of taxes that we already pay. No government in it’s right mind is going to develop a vaccine that is supposed to keep the population healthy and keep the economy from crashing and then ask one and all to cough up more money to get a jab. In addition, we’ve seen H5N1 coming for some time so it should be more of a known quantity that Covid 19. But hey, paranoia runs deep and the conspiracy crowd will be out in force ‘cos it’s what they do.
Well said sir. Far too frequently politics these days consists of, silly distractions, simplistic “solutions” to complex problems, bribing us with our own money, or an unholy combination of all of the above. No wonder the average citizen is discouraged from participating in civic activities when all this is going on against a background of matters of immediate concern such as putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their family’s head. The politicians are supposed to be working for US, time to remind them of this.
Judges don’t make the law, they interpret the law with reference to the Constitution. Politicians actually make the laws but they must do so with regards to the Constitution and Common law.The people DO have a say, it’s called an election, we have them every four years. But one of the things about democracy some people don’t understand is that in order to have a say, you have to VOTE.
Let’s trace this back to the source. The main reason there are so many homeless people is the decision by both the feds and the province in the ‘90s to get out of public housing. Second there’s the lack of access to mental health care that people can afford. Thirdly there’s the problem of addiction. Now none of these is the responsibility of local government but it’s the local government who ends up dealing with it but without the funds to do so properly.Ford set the pattern for the misuse of the “notwithstanding “ clause by his frivolous use of it to justify changing the makeup of Toronto city council and it’s gone downhill ever since. Using it at the city level is misuse because it gets the upper levels of government off the hook for the problem they created.
Spot on. Everything you say is true but Ford used the magic words, “tax grab” and the masses followed him. The facts are against him, the study by TMU and Sick Kids is against him, but the idea that a machine is standing in judgement over their driving skills is too much for some to bear. After all, we’re all superb drivers, it’s the OTHER guy who should be taken off the road. Maybe after an ambulance or fire truck arrives late because of having to slow down for those humps we might hear a different song but I’m not holding my breath.
The homelessness crisis can be traced back to the day Paul Martin decided to “balance the budget” by, among other cuts, getting the Federal government out of public housing. The reasoning was that the gap would be filled by “the market”. The same approach was followed by Mike Harris, in part due to cuts in Federal funding to the provinces. He thought the same thing, “the market” would sort it all out. Clearly “the market” had other ideas. It’s time the senior levels of government stopped playing with people’s lives and got back into housing because as we can see from the article on renoviction the only thing “the market” is interested in is making as large a profit as possible.
Bumper sticker solutions to serious problems. Does he really think that cutting the GST will make homes “affordable”? Affordable is 30% of your annual income on shelter, taking 15% off the price of a $1,000,000 home won’t help most people. PP makes a great gadfly but beyond that not so much.
Sigh, the donations were always purely voluntary. The rest is simple physics as anyone who has played contact sports will understand. The faster an opponent is moving when the collide with you the more it hurts. When the “opponent” is a vehicle weighing a couple of tonnes it really matters. The faster you are travelling the longer it takes to stop. The faster you are travelling the less time you have to react. What is so hard to understand?
Ready, shoot, aim.. all over again. Unless a policeman comes with each sign the signs won’t have much effect. As for the speed bumps and roundabouts that has been left a bit late in the year so essentially useless until construction season in the spring, when, to be fair, the construction will slow things down. And all this because people couldn’t handle the fact that a speed camera drew it to their attention that they weren’t as good drivers as they thought they were.
Ford has nothing to do with the process. Negotiating trade agreements is a Federal responsibility. The current agreement does not expire until 2026, Trump is trying to game the system by trash talking and trying to get under people’s skin. Ford is out of his depth.
