Couple of perspectives. Totally understand why some of the expenses seem unjust. From another perspective green fees, hockey tickets, etc should be expensable in some cases. The mayor should be out in public, should be at special events, should be in places where business people are. Understandably some people don’t see it that way. I think it’s part of the job sometimes.
It’s journalism like this that continues to create divide between parties and between countries. Stop this. Stop blaming trump for everything. He certainly not a great leader but using him as a scapegoat for everything that is wrong in Canada is simply unproductive, unaccountable, and weak. America should be welcomed as a neighbour not shunned. Let’s fix our own house and quit trying to burn someone else’s down.
This seems extremely petty... There aren't many places in major City's where you can stay for less than $250-$300/night. $50 for daily meals is nearly impossible with today's prices. While it is certainly important to be conscious of spending taxpayer dollars on travel expenses you also have to be reasonable. If you want to attract good competent people to these positions expecting them to stay in $80/night run down motels and a meal allowance that buys a donut at Tim Hortons certainly won't do it.
Of course this shouldn't result in criminal charges! The fact that police investigation was even brought in is ridiculous. Complete waste of time and resources. That being said the mayor should absolutely face some disciplinary consequences for his actions such as losing the seat or whatever discipline is written into the City's code of conduct.
Who do you expect to hire when you offer this type of salary? If you don't offer competitive pay you won't attract top talent... As a taxpayer, I'm willing to pay for someone who can do this job properly, reliably, and ethically. Start at $150,000 and go up from there. You get what you pay for. And have some performance metrics tied to this. If they don't meet the mark they don't keep job.
I find it so interesting individuals can change their narrative when things don’t go their way. When the Trump administration cried rigged election and threat to democracy liberals said anyone who believed that would be a conspiracy theorist. Now the liberals/democrats are crying democracy is dead. The only remedy to your situation is to LOOK IN THE MIRROR. Hold yourself accountable. Talk with people from both sides and actually LISTEN! Stop with all this liberal/conservative back and forth. It’s incredibly unproductive and extremely divisive. Stop playing victim and start rebuilding.
Danielle Smith is a highly intelligent leader and holding out is absolutely the right thing to do. She’s the only premier that has gone and spoken with Donald Trump and she’s also very aware that Canadian crude runs from Alberta, through Michigan, and back into Sarnia. Great work Danielle!!
Jobs... there are few good paying jobs left in Northern Communities. High taxes drive away businesses and residents. Instead of immigration to make it appear as though the population is growing, create incentives for businesses to set up in Northern Ontario communities. I'm sure, like North Bay, people in other northern communities face continuous red tape and constant delay in building infrastructure, homes, businesses etc. So get this stuff out of the way and let people build businesses and places for people work. There is a incredible quality of life to be had in Northern Communities and a great place to raise a family. But without stable, good paying work, people will continue to move south.
There is no easy solution but as a taxpayer I feel the solution should reflect what the majority of taxpayers are willing to accept. And I can almost guarantee that taxpayers from all communities are tired of their Downtowns being overrun by addicts and criminal activity. Washrooms are not the problem.... Stop spending on ineffective social programs and divert the funds to a facility that can handle these people. Maybe a few of them would actually benefit and, in the process, return Downtown back to people who live and work there.
This is not going to benefit anyone... This will be funded through taxpayer dollars and likely result in another annual increase for taxpayers. Sometimes the juice isn't worth the squeeze...
This is the best news Ontario has received in a long time. Finally a decision that takes the needs of Ontario residents, business owners, and the economy into consideration. Thank you Mr. Leece for taking a crucial first step into improving Ontario's economy and standard of living.
Seems every group involved is quick to blame another group for the issues... When I went to Chippewa in late 90s early 2000s we had "old school" teachers that disciplined us when we deserved it. Our classes had 30+ students and we did just fine. Parents played an active role in education as well. Seems today there is limited discipline, no accountability on the student, and little motivation to do well since nobody fails anymore... Life is hard, try putting in some effort and I bet the results will appear...
The article mentions that these supervised sites have been effective in other regions according to the Mayor. Anyone know in which regions these sites have been considered effective?
People are so obsessed with Trump! Forget Trump! Why are Canadians not holding their own leadership accountable? Why are we not expediting infrastructure projects? Trump has nothing to do with interprovincial trade and building our own economy at home… stop focusing on Trump and start focusing on your elected leaders… I’m tired of paying more on tax than anything else and excessive spending and virtue signaling. Get back to work Canada!
If you voted for someone who crossed the floor, your voice does not count. They say people vote for the person, not the party. That is false. People vote for both. This is the first time in history floor crossings have resulted in a majority government. Regardless of which side you support this should be concerning to you. Now that this has happened once it will continue to happen and fair elections, as we knew them, are over. RIP Canada. It was nice while it lasted.
How can people oppose an attempt to help industrial development move faster, more efficiently, and cost effectively? Do we not want people to go to work, bring critical minerals to market and actually contribute to increasing Canada’s tanking GDP? This is a no brainer. Hurry up and get it done!
I think it's very interesting that Liberals and Democrats alike claim to be the parties of inclusivity, diversity, and equality. Yet if someone disagrees or has a different perspective they are completely written off or "Cancelled". Gretzky is a hockey legend. Just like Tiger Woods is a golf legend. Why do we insist on writing everyone off because you disagree with their politics... Enough of this craziness... Just live your life...
