Are you kidding me… trying to hold his pay over this… Mayor Shoemaker as a civil lawyer working for a firm that specializes in employment law should be well aware that an employer cannot use punitive measures such as withholding pay as discipline against an employee. I understand that the city councillors are paid an honorarium so are not technically city employees but what kind of example is this setting, especially from a lawyer with expertise in this area. And what possibly does a forced apology do? Our city council needs to get back to city business and stop this ridiculous sand box dispute. So childish!
I believe the response to your question is YES. They lost their minds day one on the job. This city will be bankrupt under the current leadership in no time.
Please forgive me here but a previous article stated that almost 2800 members were going to suffer when the Y was scheduled to close, but now 2400 memberships demonstrate sustainability? HOW? Great Lukendas rushing in to help, everyone already had an idea it was them…. But are they really helping? Or just ripping the band aid off very slowly and wasting tax dollars in the process…. The financial statements speak for themselves, 2400 members is not sustainable… they couldn’t even get all their initial members back, what chance do they have of expanding their base to the additional 2700 needed by December? Fat chance that’s happening… time to call it quits
They aren’t paid enough at over 100k a year for a first class firefighter to work a few days a month? Good god this irresponsible spending of tax dollars is getting out of control
Is it really that hard for drivers to stop at stop signs, and for those who have the right of way to safely have the right of way? Drivers need to focus on driving, this is not brain surgery, theres adequate warnings and notices, not to mention that you should not be relying on memory as to where theres a stop sign vs lights, the stop sign is right in front of you! The police need to amp up traffic enforcement, enough of this downtown garbage... We need Lois Beckett Back!
$40/hour jeeze that’s a great wage for a one year career college diploma! 20,000 calls a year means 54 calls a day so if you had 5 trucks on the road that’s 11 patients a day, and at peak times is it not 7 or 8 trucks on in a day? That seems like not a lot of work compared to nurses in the ER juggling multiple patients at once and well over 11 patients in a 12 hour shift…
And are these 2400 members committed to at least a year? Or is it month to month membership? And how many of them are the discounted memberships for just the cardio and weight room? Transparency!!! There is none
There needs to be a lot more disclosure on this before anything happens. While it may put some strain on the municipal services in the short term, what do they expect is going to happen long-term. Pretty sure the pool at the Y is older than the QE pool the city replaced years ago! who is going to pay for all the new infrastructure they will require. These are all short term fixes with no long term insight.
Will the city be disclosing how many tax dollars have gone into this so far (ie staff resources etc) and how they intent to do the same for other businesses struggling in our community?
@jimssm - none of the other downtown locations are outside AED locations and they are in buildings that have constant supervision. Outdoors and no constant supervision is a whole other ballpark.
All of these "revitalization" ideas are great CONCEPTS, but first and foremost we need to fix the infrastructure that is failing our community. I value tourism, and reality is there are more cruise ships stopping here, etc. that do draw some tourist dollars in, but not enough to justify spending all this money when we cannot fix our roads, etc... Perhaps stop throwing money at private organizations like the Y and fix some of the infrastructure then do these ideas? BTW, Sootoday it would be nice if you followed up on how the Y is doing with their minimum requirement of memberships... doesnt look like they are even close, so whats going to happen, is Mr. Mayor gonna say "well they tried so lets throw away the money anyway?"
He’s a class act… this report literally tells us nothing, I cannot agree more we need an election ASAP we made a very wrong decision here… this guy just Ioves the camera and the power and control. I hope Mrs. Hollingsworth runs for mayor, she would act with integrity and prioritize the actual needs of this city
